As Austin Commercial,
a nationally recognized building and design general
contractor, begins construction on Children’s
Medical
Center
in
Plano
, they are also planning a strategy to manage the large
volume of construction debris generated by the site.
After an exchange of ideas with
Plano
’s C&D Recycling Coordinator Karen Hargis, the
general contractor has taken a progressive stand toward
environmental conservation, planning to recycle as much as
85% of the projects waste materials.
This project located
at
5050 Hedgecoxe Road
in
Plano
,
Texas
began construction in November 2005 and will encompass 58
acres with a building over 300,000 square feet and 72
patient rooms. Although
the building will be a cast in place concrete structure,
Austin Sr. Superintendent, Jeff Horn, predicts a large
amount of wood debris from the concrete forms and a
considerable amount of concrete debris.
Interior structure will include recyclable
materials as well including drywall gypsum and a large
amount of cardboard packaging from lighting and plumbing
fixtures, HVAC, and medical equipment.
Utilizing the recycling resources of Allied
Waste Services, the project leaders have also included
single stream recycling within all of the four large
office trailers on site to recycle office paper, plans,
plastic bottles and aluminum cans.
An award winning
construction company, Austin Commercial is a company that
deals in diverse areas of construction and is already
proficient with efficient, successful methods of debris
management. Recently,
the company finished a 220,000 sq. ft. LEED (Leadership in
Energy and Environmental Design) building for Texas
Instruments in
Richardson
, where it was reported the company recycled an average
85% of debris from the project site.
The large construction company also finished
an addition to the
Plano
Presbyterian
Hospital
on
Tennyson Parkway
as well as a new LEED building in
McKinney
. While the
Children’s
Medical
Center
is not a LEED registered construction project, project
managers are still concerned with the environmental impact
heavy construction will have on the lovely area
surrounding the large complex and plan on doing their part
to preserve it.
Karen Hargis will be
spotlighting The Children’s
Medical
Center
building project with updates throughout the course of
construction highlighting Austin Commercials recycling and
waste minimization strategies.
