The Kristin Kirkley scholarship was created in memorial
of a former North Texas USGBC member that was actively involved with the chapter. Kristin Kirkley was a
fun, kind, thoughtful individual with aspirations of graduate school and world travel. She generously gave
to her community in many ways including tutoring struggling students and coaching pee-wee soccer. The
USGBC North Texas Chapter's Graphics Committee was another grateful recipient of her time and energy.
From the moment she joined the committee, she was absolutely invaluable. Whether it was her creative, eye-catching quarterly postcards or her quick html
translations, her work was always selfless and deeply appreciated. However, it was her indelible spirit and
radiant smile that made their biggest mark. She faced everything life set before her with optimism, enthusiasm
and regard for others. Kristin and 3 of her friends died in a tragic plane crash on their way to Telluride, Co in
September of 2006. The North Texas Chapter honors her memory with a memorial fund that helps young
professionals and students integrate into the green building movement by reimbursing them upon
successfully passing the LEED AP exam.
The fellowship must be used within 9 months of public
announcement or forfeited. Applicants must be a current North Texas Emerging Green Builder and submit
a 500 word essay with two letters of reference. After reviewing all of the submissions, a selection is made at
the sole discretion of the Scholarship Committee of the North Texas Chapter. The scholarship is based on
community, university and USGBC involvement as well as future commitment to the chapter. Awards are
announced at the annual January Extravaganza, date TBD; scholarship applications will be available at UTA
Architecture office or via EGB listserv email mid October and due on December 1st.
